Designer

Rare desk and chair set in blue lacquered ash designed by André Sornay, cabinetmaker and designer from Lyon, circa 1955.

Produced by Sornay Meubles in Lyon, this ensemble epitomizes postwar French modernist furniture. Both the desk and chair are crafted in natural stained ash with a bright blue lacquer finish. The inclined legs and precise construction demonstrate Sornay's patented tigette assembly system, developed in 1955 to combine strength, modularity, and elegance.

The contrast between the warm wood and vivid blue finish reflects Sornay's modern approach to structure and color. A refined example of Lyonnais craftsmanship and the rational, architectural spirit that defined André Sornay's contribution to 20th-century French design.
