  • Kou Wakabayashi

Solid wood sculpture by Kou Wakabayashi, Japan, circa 1970.

Directly carved from a single block, this sculpture develops a structured composition centered around a solid disc embedded within inclined planes and tense geometric volumes. The integrated base creates a continuous relationship between a metallic support and sculptural mass.

The surface is entirely worked with a gouge, leaving controlled and rhythmic tool marks that modulate light across the wood. The dialogue between the circular form and the angular structure creates a refined tension, positioning the work between geometric abstraction and the organic sensibility characteristic of post-war Japanese sculpture.

Unique piece, signed.
