Carved from a monolithic block of diabase, a dense black volcanic stone, the sculpture combines rough-hewn and polished surfaces in a subtle play of contrasts. Organic curves gradually emerge from the mineral mass, revealing both the depth of the stone and the precision of the carving.

From the 1980s onwards, Robert Neuhauser developed an important body of stone sculptures exploring the dialogue between refined forms, architectural volumes and the natural qualities of the material. This work was notably presented in the exhibition Arbeiten in Stein at Galerie Sigristenkeller, Bülach, in 1989.

Born in Altnau, Switzerland, Neuhauser worked successively with wood, stone, bronze and aerated concrete, developing a sculptural language that highlights the intrinsic character of each material.
